The Project Studio

When Matt and I bought our house last year in Bedford, we decided to devote half of the top floor to building a decent home studio; somewhere for me to compose, somewhere soundproof for us to practice our instruments, somewhere where we could record our music the way we wanted it recorded, and for free.

What we have built is not exactly high-end state-of-the-art compared to many other project studios out there, however we have taken much care to build a live room that is soundproof and acoustically ‘dead’, invested in a collection of quality microphones, wide band-width preamps and all the instruments we need to get the job done. Having the ability to compose and record the performances and then the option to mix/master completely in-house saves time and money.

As far as composing is concerned, I have everything I need to operate at a professional level; I can easily create demos of scores, compose straight to picture using Logic and Soundtrack Pro, extract parts for players... and of course record and mix performances of my work. Whatever can’t be done convincingly with samples and plugins, can certainly be done by live musicians and I have good relationships with many in the local area.

The best part of this studio set up is that it is fully mobile -- if I can’t fit the ensemble in here, or if the performance venue has a great ambience that is worth capturing, I can get the same quality recordings on site with up to 18 channels of input.
